Heavy Thoughts

Heavy Thoughts. Something we all have from time to time. When things in life turns for the worse, when we miss someone, when a friend or family member gets ill, when love breaks, when jobs are lost. But we all normally get through it because we know that things get better, that not all is sad, and that time heals.

This music is an expression of the heavy thoughts. The fear. The uncertainty. But in the dark waves is the hope and confidence and support from others expressed by the melody lines at the end played by the bright instruments.

Music style is soft rock ballad. I hope you enjoy the music. Soon the sun comes out and warms the little bird on the picture.

Hot Summer Rock

It is warm. It is summer. It is time for some Hot Summer Rock

Music is a moderately paced, 4 to the floor, synth rock piece. Get a cool beer from the fridge, turn the volume up, and rock that foot.

The Land Of The Fjords

We have been planning our next vacation. This time the destination will be "The Land Of The Fjords". We are going a little north this time to our neighbours Norway. After a day in Oslo we will drive to the western part which is endless beautiful landscapes of mountains and fjords. The planning and all the beautiful pictures inspired this piece of music.

The music is a slow waltzing piece with both acoustic and electric instruments. Pop music but with a little folk inspiration in the melody lines. Enjoy.

Jenni Goes Out To Dance

My dear aunt Jenni inspired this piece of music when she visited us for 3 weeks this summer.
Jenni - the sister of my father - went to Vancouver, Canada when she was a young woman to work for a year or two. She met this wonderful man and stayed.
I was working on this jazz piece, and when she heard it, she said it reminded her of when she went out dancing as a young girl. So that became the title.

The music is a latin jazz piece with a smooth sax and soft horns.

I can imagine myself sitting with my sweet wife in a restaurant with this music playing, telling her how beautiful her eyes are as they reflect the candlelight.

March Of The Crabs

March Of The Crabs. The famous event on Christmas Island where millions of red crabs migrate to the ocean and roads are closed.

A rock and roll piece.

Lovely to be back making music. I have had family visiting the past 3 weeks so it has been impossible to find time to make and listen to music.

Constitution Day

June the 5th 1849 was the day that Denmark went from having a king with absolute power to being the constitutional monarchy we are today. The constitution has been changed several times since. Latest in 1953. The politicians always made sure that the new constitutions were signed on June the 5th to maintain that date as constitution day.
This piece of music is a classical piece that celebrates this important law which is the foundation of our democracy and our human rights.

The music is for a full classical orchestra and one tiny synth. It starts in A minor, modulates to C major and back to A minor. It ends in full steam in E major. It has some Nordic melodic influence in the minor key parts and the major key parts play a melody that expresses celebration.

Caprice

Caprice is the name of a lovely red wine from the Crozes-Hermitage area in the northern Rhone valley. The producer is lovely woman Christelle Betton who we visited on our recent vacation in the area

I finished this tune as I was finishing a bottle of the Caprice.

It has been more than a month since I last uploaded music. We have been away in France and as we returned we started a renovation of our bathroom. Our house has been a dust hell for a while and my computers and keyboards have been covered in plastic. We are still not done but last night I missed my music too much and created this small piece.

Let There Be Drums

Let There Be Drums. A cover version of Sandy Nelson's hit from 1961 with a twist of 2014 and a twist of blues at the end, but not too much.

It is a piece of music my old grandfather Peder Lavrsen loved, and for this reason I have wanted to do this one for years. Now was the time. This has been fun to do drumming on my Roland SPD-SX as well as on my keyboard.

Elin's Garden

I was working on this piece of music. Then I looked out of the window and saw the neighbour Elin on the opposite side of the street nursing her little beautiful garden. Soon there will be flowers everywhere. Our garden is... not as nice smile

So here is Elin's Garden for you. Happy pop music with a lot of variations including a quiet jazzy intermezzo.

Further Side of Silence

Again Stan Loh has written a catchy melody and poetic lyrics to go with it.
And again I got free hands to add my arrangement.
A simple arrangement this time. Bass, a few carefully selected synth drum sounds, cymbals, a pluck synth, and an Irish flute.
The song is about the people that make inventions and use their imagination to think ideas that take us humans further and further.

My Song Is Flat

My Song Is Flat is a jazz waltz

I have wanted to write a jazz waltz for a long time and when Mary suggested a collaboration I knew this was the right occasion because I have admired Mary's jazz vocal since I joined iCompositions.

Mary agreed to write lyrics. This is her first lyrics. And her first jazz waltz. And I am very amazed with the result.

Music composed by Kenneth Lavrsen
Lyrics by Mary McGrath

Vocal by Mary
All instruments and mix by Kenneth

Summer Romance

After a January with maybe one day of visible sun my dreaming and longing towards the spring and summer once again inspired a sunshine melody.

It has taken me two weeks to complete this. I used 26 tracks incl many of pure percussion. Lots of percussion. I shall now bore you or entertain you with all the details :-)

I started off with the idea of a sunshine tune in minor key. So the main key is C minor but with some small twists to allow chromatic notes to colour the melody line.

The music starts with the Lambada beat/bass and leads into the main melody theme played by some layered whistles and synths and finger picked acoustic guitar.

The music then develops into a section with the same progression but a new melody line played by accordion and melodion layered with an e-bowed piano. It gives a sound like the rays from the sun, warm and bright. Chords get played by steeldrums.

Third section brings us back to the main melody now played by a plucked modelled plate/string instrument. And I introduce banjo to play the chords

The music now develops in a surprising way. We enter a long bridge part which is almost like a song in the song in 3 small sections - each modulating and playing with major/minor and key changes. It is also brings back the steel drums playing the chords. It starts with a melody played by horns. Then comes a new little melody with a warm brass-like synth playing a theme that moves between major and minor. The long intermezzo section ends with a new melody played by a cello-like synth and helped along by the horns.

The next section brings us back to the main melody theme. The chords are now played by an army of instruments incl. pianos. Banjo is back. Lead instrument is a bell sounding cool Zebra2 patch. Horns continue to support the lead.

Finally we round off the song quietly with the end of the main theme as the sun goes down over the ocean and we hold hands with the loved one on the beach.
Oh, and did I mention the drink in the other hand?

Two Hearts

Stan sent me this beautiful song as a guitar track and a vocal track. His performance was so great that I decided to keep these tracks as final tracks and just add a simple arrangement of bass, soft drums, and accordion.

A very romantic and mature song. I hope you like it as much as I do.

You Got Me Crazy

By Cinderella (Diane)

I've never really done any Jazz songs before, but when I heard this wonderful piece about two months ago, I knew I had to give it a try...the urge was just TOO great. smiley

Apparently, this piece started with a short bass riff with piano chords from Tom, that Kenneth took and built the music around. ...At my request, this version has been shortened to "radio edit" length. The original is entitled "A New Beginning" and can be found here. ANewBeginning

It didn't take me too long to come up with the lyrics because I was so inspired by the music. I remember while listening to this the first time, a particular part in the song had me so wanting to "kick my legs up in the air", so that line def had to be included in the lyrics. I added a few harmonies here and there, where I thought they might sound good. ..........Hope you enjoy our collaboration, and thanks to all who listen. smiley

Little Transformer

An instrumental with a huge sound. A mix of acoustic instruments, cool synth patches, processed vocals, processed piano. And drums. Huge macho drums.

And naturally a strong melody.

As I was making this music I had been playing some gentle instruments and had some ideas of the drums. I told my wife that I wanted her to hear the drum fills I wanted to do. So the music was playing and I was sitting at the keyboard playing the massive drum sounds very loud. So Diane told me that I was her Little Transformer going from gentle man to huge monster with my drumming. So that is the story behind the title "Little Transformer"

Loud sound and good speakers enhance this music for sure. Enjoy the fun

Endless Love

I was in the romantic mood when I wrote this.

A very simple piece with only four virtual instruments. The initial part is only a synth playing quarter note chords and the melody and an electric bass. Then strings are added and take over the melody and adding harmony - played by a single patch. And finally the melody is played by an old analog synth patch of the kind that has soul if you play the keys gently.

I hope you enjoy the melody and join the romantic mood.

Strive On - a father telling his son to follow his dreams and fight to become the best

Again a great song written by Stan Loh.
And again I had free hands to arrange it.

Stan Loh dedicated this song to Keith Loh for his recent birthday

Circle Of Life

A happy disco melody. Get on the dance floor. Or rock that foot in your favorite chair

Title comes as usually from the lyrics I never wrote. The idea was to make verses of childhood, adulthood, and old age.

A New Beginning

This time a jazz piece with all the horns and guitars and piano and keyboards.

This piece started with Tom sending me a short bass riff with piano chords, asking if I felt like building a piece of music around it. It sounded so funky and cool so I said yes right away.

So I started building a piece of music using this riff. I added more chords and let the riff follow the chords. And then added more instruments. Moved the initial riff to the left hand on a piano. And later to a Moog bass. Soon a melody was developed using a bit of blues scale notes also.
Then I added horns, and more horns.

During the process I sent many versions to Tom and he gave lots of good ideas both on instrumentation and the sound.
It was the idea that Tom would mix and master but the files sizes became too large and I used plugs he did not have so instead he guided me to finish the job.

I have learned a lot in this process. It took around two months to do. But it was worth it.

I hope you all like the result. Thanks Tom for the inspiration and that cool riff.

Venice

A calm melodic piece in 6/8 which I partly composed on my iPad while I was on vacation in beautiful Venice, Italy

A piece with a long chord progression only played twice. With modulations and curls on the melody line and lots of fun chords. Instrumentation is dominated by many different guitar sounds. And a bass sound inspired by an old Italian song from the 60s.

Soft pop with a twist of jazz waltz.

The image is one I took at the Grand Canal in Venice. Enjoy.

Birds In Winter

This is a mix of world music, electronica, and pop. With soundscapes, with major key chorus, and minor key verse. With human voices, old instruments, and cool synthesizer sounds

I am not sure where the title came from. It just came to me.

Enjoy the ride with the birds on a trip around the world - in winter

I Feel Free

After two weeks where it has been difficult to find time for my music, I am happy to post a new song. I Feel Free is a swinging pop tune with mostly "real" instruments - only one synth. As always with focus on chord progression and melody lines.

Comet ISON

Astronomy, stars, planets, galaxies, comets. An eternal source of inspiration.

Comet ISON is on its way towards the sun. It can be viewed in telescopes. After the passage round the sun, if the comets survives, it has potential to be so visible that we can see it in the morning even though it is daylight. The show should be around end of November and last maybe a month or so. Earth is safe on this one.

A beautiful love song by Stan Loh. A song about love that could not last.

Stan gave me free hands and I added some Asian traditional touch to this wonderful song

The Day She Walked Away

Melancholic tune. A man looking back thinking about the woman he loved so much. The woman that walked away one day.

A slow pace piece with strong focus on the melody. Mainly in E-minor but modulates to other keys. Melody instruments are sitar guitar and jazz guitar. And the huge orchestra with strings, woodwinds, horns, piano, and a few synth arpeggios to give a strong rhythmic feel.

One day maybe someone will write lyrics. Maybe some crooner voice will sing the song. But I think the story is told very clearly without words. The power of music. And love, the inspiration that will always be.

A light hearted rock and roll piece with a shuffle swing, surely inspired by all the swinging nice jazz I have heard in concerts at this years Copenhagen Jazz Festival.

Memory Of Krakow

Fusion of pop, opera, and classical orchestra music.

I was in Krakow, Poland a few weeks ago on a short business visit. The beautiful city and the friendly people made a good impression on me and want me to go back. Here is my musical tribute.

The melody itself came to me in a dream. I woke up a morning and had the melody in my head and I immediately grabbed my iPad and keyed it in as a simple piano track. I have no clue if I have heard part of the melody line somewhere else.

Fly Higher

Fly Higher has its name from the fact that I composed the first notes sitting with my iPad on an air plane. So the name stuck

It is a pop song with a strong melody and a swinging jazzy rhythm. I have been playing with changing key several times during the rather long chord progression. Mainly acoustic instruments and voices. But also a few polished synth sounds.

And it is the first song I post where I play on my new Roland A-88 midi keyboard. And I love it.
