Motion segfaults when image size width=640 keight=480

Question

My logitech C270 webcam will only work with the default width=320, height=240. When I change to 640x480, I get a segmentation fault. I have tried multiple versions of ffmpeg, and I have built ffmpeg and motion from source, and tried a bunch of motion.conf settings, but the issue persists. Can you help a young man who is down on his luck?
Running debian on beaglebone black, connected to a Logitech C270 webcam. 

motion.conf with width=320, height=240 is great. Increasing these values as in the following motion.conf gets the subsequent error:
