Motion - Support Question 2010x 06x 24x 214932

Adjusting resolution from 640x480 to 176x144 - Wouldn't seem to be USB related

Question

When starting motion the resolution is being dropped from VGA to 176x144. I've read some other bug reports/mailing list entries where this problem is usually caused by a USB problem i.e. USB version 1.1. However I can run the webcam in 640x480 using the 'cheese' app which would seem to elimate USB performance as the cause.

I've tried all 9 of the v4l2 palette settings but this makes no difference.

I'd love to get this working in full resolution.
OS Ubuntu 10-04 (Lucid) running on HP 6325 laptop with 3 x USB 2.0 interfaces.
Webcam is a 'QuickCam E3500'

Note this lines:

Supported palettes:
[1] 0: MJPG (MJPEG)
[1] 1: YUYV (YUV 4:2:2 (YUYV))

For me solution was to change from

v4l2_palette 8

to

v4l2_palette 0

or

v4l2_palette 1

I had the same problem with a Logitech C500 webcam.

By reading the output of motion -s, I found the correct palette identified.

Two palettes were identified. YUYV didn't work.

In my case, v412_palette 2 was the right answer.

I set the resolution to 1280x1024 but motion limited the resolution to 800x600.

The 1280x1024 is interpolated so 800x600 is probably the true resolution.

I am using an ancient IBM 300GL Pent III as a headless server. It has USB 1.x.

Hi
v4l2_palette 8

I am building another Motion system on an old PC with USB 1.1. With one camera connected to the PC USB port, the resolution was terrible.

I installed a generic PCI card with two USB 2.0 ports. With two cameras connected to this card, I got full 1280x1024 resolution from both Logitech C500 cameras. It seems that if there is insufficient bandwidth on the USB port, the resolution is forced down.
